Table Staining Preview Teaser

I've been so busy working on my dining room. I feel like I have done so much work on it, and it's finally coming together! I am so excited. I have redone my entire dining room for less than $100, which makes me feel so proud! I've also redone my stepsons room for less than $30, we got my stepdaughter a new to us bed for less than $20, all thanks to Craigslist and garage sales (and a little elbow grease). I am actually becoming quite obsessed with it. So, I used a product to stain the top of the dining table called General Finishes Gel Stain . I chose gel stain mainly because I read reviews that it was super easy to use and it didn't smell the place up. I can safely say these reviews were spot on! The stain was the consistancy of chocolate pudding (and even looked like it!) so it didn't splatter. It also didn't require a brush and perfect application. I read some instructions from bloggers who instructed us to use a men's athletic sock to apply. We tried ...

Green Craigslist Dresser Story

So, I put these pics in with my dining room reveal, but I thought I would do something additional about this dresser. As you can see, this dresser was green, but wood. I got it for free on CL and it was missing one piece of hardware. Yes, those are stickers of some kind, but they aren't covering up a hole, so I am not really sure what purpose they served. But all the drawers worked and it was in good condition. It just looked God awful. The first thing I did was spray paint it to match the table with Krylon Dual Paint and Primer in Ivory. I also spray painted all of the hardward in Krylon Oil Rubbed Bronze. My original plan was to stain the top in the same stain as the dining room table, but since it turned out that the green layer was actually veneer, it just wouldn't be possible to do it without much more work than I wanted to do. So I decided to use acrylic paint in Gold and just add some accents. This is how it looked right after I was finished. I just put some gold...

Upcoming Dining Room Transformation

I am so excited to be bringing you this news.... My dining room is getting a makeover! This is how it looked when I started. Actually, the truth is that it looks a little different. I painted the lampshades black and put up some horrible curtains that are still in my house. But as you can see from this picture, the transformation is taking shape. I think I had mentioned this, but that table and chairs was a hand me down from my parents. We've had that table as long as I can remember and now, it's mine! It's a really pretty set, but I've had some ideas for how to redo it for a while. If you look in the above picture, it's a wash of brown, what with the hardwood floors and wood paneling. So, I started thinking about what I want to do. I bought some Ivory spray paint and will be painting all of the chairs and base of the table. It will then get some glaze to bring down the brightness of the color and bring out the detailing. The top of the table w...

The Evolution of Decorating

When I first started living by myself, I would say that I could put a room together and have it look decent. It would flow and it had a theme. My "style," if I had one, consisted of easy and safe colors. Lots of wood, maroons, greens, browns, and darker blues. Neutral colors were definitely my go-to. Don't get me wrong - I have always loved where I lived and felt it was cozy and homey and neutral colors are always a great way to go.   Things started to change when I discovered blogs. Blogs changed my life because they taught me how to do things I would never have tried before. They also taught me about products I would never have known existed because I hadn't ever stepped foot in a home improvement store before, at least not for things like chalk board paint or painter's tape.   The first thing I ever tried was a gallery wall . It turned out OK. I remember staring at the wall - it was nothing special looking at it now-but I remembered thinking, this ...

Our Trip to Orlando and Universal/Disney Travel Tips! (Long Post!!!)

Well, we just got back from our trip to Orlando! And I am tired and sore, but happy and so very glad we were able to do this as a family! Most of my Facebook peeps saw our pictures, but I wanted to share about our vacation and a little travel tips for those thinking of planning something similiar!  Use a Travel Agent! First and foremost - I booked my trip, basically last minute, through the amazing and wonderful Lana Kluge  . Booking through a travel agent costs you, the consumer, NOTHING. It doesn't make your trip any more expensive and adds nothing to your end bill. What it does do is add a valuable service to your vacation, and that's exactly what Lana offered us. She has been to Disney multiple times and was able to answer all of my many questions up to, and while on, my vacation. Even with booking our resort, we were able to ask where our room was located, as the resort we stayed at (Art of Animation) is very large and I read people saying they had to walk a very...
