Before and After: Desk

So, remember how I told you that I was really into turquoise accents lately? Well, I couldn't get it out of my head. So, I had to return some spray paint to Walmart anyway, and I just exchanged it for some blue.

"What can I paint?" I thought....

Then, it came to me! My desk! I am just so tired of black and tan everywhere. Mainly black. So, even though it just went from this

to this in December...

I decided to move its' location and give it a new outfit!

So this little corner went from this...

to this!

I am in love!

Table Staining Preview Teaser

I've been so busy working on my dining room. I feel like I have done so much work on it, and it's finally coming together! I am so excited. I have redone my entire dining room for less than $100, which makes me feel so proud! I've also redone my stepsons room for less than $30, we got my stepdaughter a new to us bed for less than $20, all thanks to Craigslist and garage sales (and a little elbow grease). I am actually becoming quite obsessed with it.

So, I used a product to stain the top of the dining table called General Finishes Gel Stain.

General Finishes Gel Stains

I chose gel stain mainly because I read reviews that it was super easy to use and it didn't smell the place up. I can safely say these reviews were spot on!

The stain was the consistancy of chocolate pudding (and even looked like it!) so it didn't splatter. It also didn't require a brush and perfect application. I read some instructions from bloggers who instructed us to use a men's athletic sock to apply. We tried that and I didn't like it, so I finished it using a sponge brush, which worked like a charm. I got a small container that cost less than $10, as well as the top coat, which was also less than $10. Both went on with a sponge brush. I started last Monday night, and applied one coat per night. I applied three coats, then let the table dry for 4 days. I applied two top coats, one per night, and allowed those both to dry 24 hours.

This table still has one more round of painting and a round of glazing to go, but here is the top before...

And here is the small preview of the after...

Oh. My. Gaw. I have been staring at it all week. I bought these cheap dollar store placemats that are gold (never thought I would like GOLD!) but it looks amazing on the dark wood and with the rest of the room. I can tell you RIGHT now, you will not come to my house and put a wet drink or hot plate on my table ever again without a coaster or placemat. Consider yourself "Monica Gellared."

I feel like I am also using decorating as an excuse NOT to work out. Like, if I am working on something, I don't have to work out. It's wrong, I know. But what I've realized is that I have made a gazillion (and one) excuses for not having time to work out, yet somehow I've redone several pieces of furniture and make curtains, so, I'm thinking the excuses are a bit ridic.

This house is a rental, so there are some things about it that are not of our choosing. For example, none of the rooms have ceiling fans. Yet, for some reason, the dining room had one. I knew that was not the place a ceiling fan was needed, so I was looking for a light fixture I could put there instead, so I could move the fan to our room. My mother in law gave me this light fixture on our trip to Roswell. It's a nice piece, just not the style I wanted. So, here is another before and after you might like...

Before, with brass and light wood...

And after, with an ivory and oil rubbed bronze finish...

Ah. Better. Have a good night!

Kids In the Hood....

This whole weekend has kind of been a blur.

Friday, my friend Kate came down to hang out with me. I was SOOO excited to see her. She still lives in McKinney and now that I moved away from there, we don't get to see each other nearly as often. She drove down and spent the night. Even my sister Leslie got to hang out with us!

We went to Louie Louie's Dueling Piano Bar, and I can't remember the last time I laughed so much. It was great fun! We caught up at dinner, but then we just went and had a good time!

At the end of the night, we were all drinking coke, water, and taking Tylenol. My, how things change after you turn 30.

Saturday was my work picnic. It was HOT! Avery hung in there though. We went to this cool park in Irving that had a really neat playground. If it hadn't been so hot, it would have been awesome!

She gets the rosiest cheeks, always has!

She even played some games with Daddy!

"I'm HOT Mom!"

Saturday night was Colbi's last shower. I can't believe she will be here in less than a month! I will be gone for vacation July 9-12, Brooke, you hold her in till I get back!

The shower was alot of fun. Lots of friends of my family's that we've grown up with. There are four toddlers now, they were pretty entertaining. I guess that's how life is, as adults, when you've hung around the same people for years and years, and you've run out of things to talk about, life gives you grandkids. Ha!

I'd like to thank my contributing photographers this week, Brooke and Dave, for the pictures I am about to show you!

And here are a large group of adults that have molded and shaped a new generation of us youngsters throughout the years. Now that's scary.

Have a great Monday!

Jordan's Dresser, Before and After

A little before and after dresser action this morning, for you?

By the way, I am now in love with Rustoleum Metallic Finish Silver Spray Paint. After painting these handles, and seeing how smooth that paint went on, I am just LOOKING for more stuff to paint like that.

Little Miss Two Year Old. Well, mentally, anyway.

I am sure many of you are wondering how it could have been so long since I've taken a picture of my daughter. Ok, so many of you probably haven't given it a second thought. But I wanted to prove I HAVE tried!

Isn't she adorable? :-)

The blur tends to visit regularly.

You can really tell in this picture that she wasn't happy. That's because lately, any time I try to get her to do ANYTHING, and I mean ANYTHING she doesn't want to do, on come the water works, she throws herself on the floor and just starts to whine and cry. (I really don't know where she got that behavior from. Certainly wasn't me.) My mom made her this adorable outfit and Avery wouldn't give me a smile to save my life!

We were in the car waiting for Jason to pump some gas, and I thought, "while you are constrained and unable to throw yourself on the floor, I am taking pictures of you, little girl!"

She is very obviously and loudly asserting her independence these days. She loves to tell us NO. LOVES TO. And if you are trying to get her to do something, and she doesn't tell us no or throw herself on the floor, she runs away. Or goes limp. She hit her head today while she went limp in my lap on the bed, as I was trying to put her shoes on. She hit her head on the floor and started to cry. What did I say? "That's what you get for not being obedient!" Does that make me a terrible mother?

Everything lately is "What's that?" Everything she sees, she wants to know what it is. And when we ask her questions, she will say, "umm..." Like, "Avery do you want a banana or applesauce?" "Um.." as she is trying to make a choice. And she will make one, which is really cool that she knows the difference of things now. And she is saying, "yeah." I never realized as a parent how much that word grated on my nerves. You could say it all the time, but when it comes out of the mouth of your child, it sounds so ugly!

And you know what else isn't fair? When it's just me and Jason and her, she is pretty whiney, loves to throw tantrums, says no, makes a mess, and cries. But when she is visiting daycare, or with her Gigi and Pops, or with my sisters, or at church, when I ask, "How was Avery today, did she give you any trouble?" People look at me like I am a nutcase because Avery was perfectly behaved and just had so much fun! I guess that's how I know I am the mother. Only the very special behavior is reserved for me!

But you know what, no matter HOW she acts, I still can't stop squeezing her, kissing her sweet cheeks, and loving her because she is quite possibly the coolest kid I know.

Could NOT Have Said It Better Myself.

Home Decor Loves and Hates

So, lately, I've been doing lots of stuff to the furniture in my house. I am working on several projects. The problem with doing all of those projects is that creativity spurs on MORE projects. So, it got me to thinking about some home decor trends that I keep seeing and I am loving and want in my house and some trends I see now that I have no interest in putting in my home.

LOVE: Color!

Right now, I need some color in my house. Particularly, I am intrigued by turquoise touches with dark glaze.

HATE: Antlers. I don't get this trend, at all.

LOVE: Gold accents in white rooms

HATE: Union Jack. I don't HATE it, I just don't like it in my house.

Union Jack Cushion, Union Jack Fleece

Although, this dresser is pretty cool.

Union Jack Dresser

LOVE: Chevron and stripes. I am trying to figure out how to do a garage sale dresser I got for Jordan's room like this, somehow...

HATE: Beachy decor. Once again, don't hate it, it's just not my style.

LOVE: Distressing and glaze. This is the coolest, easiest way to give your furniture a little sumpn sumpn.

You know, I used think that because something was trendy in home decor, I had to like it or try to put it in my house. But now, I realize home decor is no different than a fashion trend. Do I like certain styles in other people's homes? Sure. Do I love oversized sunglasses like Nicole Richie wears ON Nicole Richie? Sure. Does that mean either of those things in my house or on my body? No. And it's OK to look at something that everyone loves and say, "I don't get it. It's ugly to me." Much like a piece of art. I look at all of these blogs and think that because they are suggesting it that I need to like it too. Well, some things people do are just ugly to me. And some I like. So, I guess that's my opinion today!
