Avery and I housesit for my seester in Waxahachie this past week. First - I am not cut out for country living. Second - it does have a few perks. Third - I realized that school starts Monday, thereby ending the longest Spring Break of all time (yippee!). Fourth - I realized that this is the year my daughter officially crosses the line into being closer to graduating than being born.
She keeps antagonizing me by saying, "Mom, I'm almost 10!" (She's been saying that since a month after her last birthday) and I say, "Stop making it go faster, you are 9....9 1/2....now it's 9 3/4."
Yep, that face is about right for that little munchkin, who's not so little anymore.
She's crossed over into the "I hate brushing my hair or fixing it in any way that isn't of my own choosing or instigation" phase. She's been in that phase, oh about 3 years now. (She's also crossed into the "I know how to get on the internet and read what you say about me online phase" so I won't share too much, LOL!) Everything right now is about asserting her independence in regards to her image, which is totally fine by me. It's never been something I've fought too much about. Life is just too short to make a 9-year-old constantly do their hair exactly as you want it. But, on this night, she actually let me dry her hair and style it - like, with a brush and hairdryer, and everything! - so I had to take a couple pics.
To quote Leslie Knope, who was quoting Jack London, "Damn the wheel of the world? Why must it continually turn over?" In other words - stop growing, kid.
When I realized I had 4 days remaining before school and we hadn't done much of anything this summer, I decided we needed to go do something. So, I took Avery to the Dallas World Aquarium which was shockingly crowded, but we managed to be socially distanced enough to pull down the ole' masks and take a few pics.
This pose was an Avery original. Look how shocked she looks to see Dory! Ha.
On the walk back, we passed by the Sweet Tooth Hotel...something I'd wanted to take her to for a while. We had such a cool time. We did a scavenger hunt and she got that fanny pack. I think she's so stinkin' adorable.
As we were headed out, we realized they had a cereal bar. Cereal being both of our favorite foods, I decided we had to get a treat. She got this drink called the Magically Delicious, a raspberry lemonade slushie topped with Lucky Charms marshmallows.
My 9-year-old self was very jealous of my 9-year-old daughter at this moment. (Sorry - 9 3/4-year-old daughter.)
We came back to this scene - chickens livin' their best life. Yeah - not cut out for country living. Ha.
I'll tell you one thing about my sister's house, though - it has the best sky, ever. It never fails to take my breath away. It makes me look like a great photographer when it's really God's amazing paintbrush.
It was a nice few days to end the summer.
